the hitler being brown eyed myth is insanely common , i wonder why this is the reason they always show his portraits in black and white and never bother coloring them idk

also it’s funny af seeing those propaganda posters where they depict americans as aryans and the germans more as asiatic “slavs”

Yes. Anglo-Americans also accused Germans of being Huns all the time, especially during the First World War. Albeit, part of this was just to point out a shared barbarism between the Germans and the Huns, but it was also trying to imply that Attila’s conquest of Germany left behind some sort of legacy in continental Germanic blood

Good post, some facts here I've never seen mentioned before. "The Unknown Warriors" by Nicholas Pringle provides some good evidence on this topic from a British perspective.

I wonder to what degree desegregation was a dress rehearsal for same-sex "marriage"? It seems to me both movements used very similar tactics and technicalities.

Expand full comment

I wouldn’t say it was a “dress rehearsal” but the two events were heavily connected. Back then, miscegenation was viewed as something of a sexual perversion in the same way gay sex was (albeit less severe). The argument in favor of it would be used time and time again, “it’s none of your business what people do as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone”. More importantly, Loving v. Virginia set the precedent that this sort of marriage discrimination was banned under the equal protection clause of 14A. This same argument would be made in Hodges v. Obergefell decades later, which made it impossible for states to restrict same-sex marriage and subsequently ended the gay marriage debate. Everything that has happened since was put on the fast track by that, because Americans realized that being against gay marriage was now politically useless.

I'm not necessarily saying that gayness was premeditated at the start; but civil rights is the thing, gay rights are just a software update.

Expand full comment

Yep, that’s what I think and the premeditated thing is why I was hesitant to call it a dress rehearsal

Expand full comment

The original architects of civil rights did not have gays in mind (they were probably homophobic), but when you dissolve boundaries you end up dissolving more boundaries. Some people call this the egalitarian ratchet effect.

I don't think many people remember that the court system is part of the government too. "I sued the government and won! I protected my rights! Yeah!" No, one part of the state used you as an excuse to punish another part of the state.

Actually, I guess it was a dress rehearsal.

Yeah it's always funny seeing WWII movies and like half the platoon is wop central, there's a couple of latinx and then maybe the rest is white, even though statistically an overwhelming majority of troops were flat out white. I'm sure it's a Hollywood thing but this whole, "the movie is about THERE courage and sacrifice", like nigga!!!! Put dem white boys in there not the wops, give them the credit they deserve! (No offense to the spaghetti benders)

Stop being mean to Italians. But yuor right, they always portray it as a bunch of ethnics. Italians, Jews, Irish, meanwhile the real soldiers were mostly Anglo (most Americans in general were, and the only reason this has decreased is because Americans now identify more with their “exotic” Ellis island ancestry)

The Pacific War was, quite literally, a race war. We were hoarded into literal concentration camps and our nation was bombed into submission.

"One of the most eye-opening stats of World War II (there are a lot) is that of some 400,000 Americans who died in World War II, only 780 of them were Black."

Maybe this explains why out of all of the verifiable US-born men who were born in 1891 or later and who lived past their 112th birthday, all but one of them were Black or at least had significant Black ancestry:

-Moses Hardy (1894-2006), 112, Black

-George Johnson (1894-2006), 112, mixed Black and White

-George Francis (1896-2008), 112, Black

-Walter Breuning (1896-2011), 114, White

-Ernest Peronneau (1902-2014), 112, Black

-Richard Overton (1906-2018), 112, Black

-Joe Willie Hollins (1906*-2018), 112*, Black

-C. P. Crawford (1907-2019), 112, Black

-Lawrence Brooks (1909-2022), 112, Black

*According to both his 1910 and 1920 US Census entries, there's a real chance that he was a bit older, anywhere from 113 to 115. But he claimed age 112 when he died, as well as during World War II.

George Feldman (1906-2018), who was White and died exactly on his 112th birthday, does not count for this, since he did not live *beyond* his 112th birthday like the men above did.
